it’s not until i received my copy of media kawasan i’m aware that there’s a young talented indonesian artist named Asvega. yes, i’ve heard her name being mentioned a few times in a mailing list when she had an exhibition held in The Japan Foundation last year. her mom was a member of the mailing list, and she was promoting the event to the other members. and i’m not a person who loves to go to art exhibitions, i’m not into art. so i couldn’t care less about the event – at that time. now, i really wish that she would have another exhibition. i really wish to see all of her paintings, coz it was love at first sight for me. i was just aimlesly skimming through the magazine, when i found a feature about asvega and her paintings. having heard the name, the article piqued my interest. and there were also some of her paintings, which were really really good.
in my opinion, she combines indonesian culture and fantasy. the objects of her paintings *the ones in the magz anyway* were women. my favorite was coral princess, a balinese dancer – with butterfly wings on her back and the lower part of her body was pictured similar to those of mermaids – sitting in the depth of sea. i also love midnight dragonfly, where a fairy – with colourful hair and dragonfly wings – was blowing bubbles of music notes out of a horn. i think it was some kind of a contemporary art, maybe? it’s just my personal interpretation, though. i’m not an art person, and i don’t understand anything about art, but i really love her paintings. i really wish someday i’ll be able to come to see her paintings in person.
